We all love Christmas. Don’t we?

The season of giving, seeing family, of presents, twinkly lights, cosy evenings and carols.

According to YouGov, around 25% of us find Christmas a particularly challenging time of the year.

Marking the start of the winter season we begin to see the nights draw in and our days getting shorter.

For many, Christmas can be a time of worry and of sadness. Seeing family can bring up passed traumas or memories of loved ones no longer with us. For those battling with their health, in can be difficult to contend with the social pressures to be happy and joyful. We see much needed services close. And then of course, there are the financial implications.

The cost of living crisis has meant many families will be cutting back this year. But the pressures to give gifts, to spend money they don’t have, are still very much present. What will be sacrificed instead: a warm home; a hot meal; a good credit score?

For most a season of joy, for some, the opposite.

Our top tips for the season:

  • Reach out for support. Pepper’s- a safe place in Oakham have a great range of drop-in sessions and activities you can get involved with.
  • Spend time with loved ones.
  • Practice self-care. Whether it’s seeing a friend, getting some fresh air, having a bubble bath or watching your favourite film, make sure you make time for yourself, and for what brings you joy.
  • Get active. Releasing endorphins can help to boost your mood and reduce stress. There are free classes at Pepper’s.
  • Spread positivity. Check in with friends, family or neighbours. Having someone to chat to can be a huge help.
  • Remember it’s ok to say no. It’s ok to not see family if it damages your mental health. It’s ok to not get that extra present.
  • If you urgently need mental health support please contact the emergency services. If you’d just like to talk, you can get hold of the Samaritans on 116 123.

For the many who love Christmas, remember to check in on those around you.

For those who don’t, remember this season will pass.

‘Sometimes, it takes more courage to ask for help than to act alone.’ - Ken Petti
